Project description and objectives
The main objective of the Germ of Life project, co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme, is to create an innovative digital technology system for better preventive management of drought risks. This initiative involves 10 entities from six Euro-Mediterranean countries (Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, France, and Cyprus) and is based on collaboratively developed and adapted data-driven solutions. These solutions will enhance drought risk prediction through commonly defined monitoring sources and indices, which will support territorial monitoring systems and provide timely drought condition alerts.
The project includes pilot tests to implement nature-based and technological solutions specifically aimed at addressing drought risk mitigation challenges in the Mediterranean area. The Germ of Life project seeks to develop, test, and adopt a “drought risk management preventive approach” built on unified data, monitoring sources, and indices, thus aiding in drought risk prediction and timely warnings.
The cross-border nature of the project enables stakeholders to collaborate on vulnerability assessments of territories using a shared taxonomy and comparable data-driven risk assessments. This collaboration also facilitates the sharing of innovative nature-based and technological solutions targeting drought risk mitigation challenges.
Germ of Life promotes climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention with a focus on resilience and ecosystem-based approaches. The project's mission is to protect, restore, and valorize the natural environment and heritage.
The project aims to address identified challenges and opportunities by providing a preventive approach to drought risk management through adapted and newly developed solutions that support regional stakeholders in:
- Drought Risk Prediction: Preventing drought risks by adopting AI and data-driven early warning systems through remote sensing and exploiting new data for drought impact detection and quantification.
- Collaboratively Assess Vulnerability Risk: Increasing coordination and cooperation in joint management and assessment of risk, and supporting decision-making in planning, valuation, and sharing results of nature-based solutions (NBS) performance and impact through data monitoring and evaluation.
- Procuring Innovative Solutions: Supporting public authorities in effectively implementing strategies and plans, including technologies and nature-based solutions suitable for drought impact mitigation.
